The latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures, published today for the 12 weeks ending 23rd March 2008 show that the Morrisons growth continues to impress with the third successive period of 11% sales growth compared with the same period last year. As a result, Morrisons holds on to its record 11.6% share.
A striking feature of this period’s data is the high growth rate of 7% recorded for Total Grocers. There are two reasons for this: firstly there is undoubtedly food price inflation, particularly in dairy products, fresh produce and bread. Secondly, Easter was particularly early this year and is included in the 12 week period ending 23rd March 2008 but not in the equivalent period last year. Thus this market growth should be treated with caution – next period will better compare like with like.
Despite this, Asda have again outperformed the market to lift their share to 17.1% from 16.9% a year ago. This high level of market growth means that Tesco and Sainsbury have both posted respectable growth rates and yet have suffered small share losses.
Somerfield, which is currently the subject of speculation regarding its future, shows a small share loss although the sales are back in positive territory with 4% year-on-year growth.
Once again, both ends of the perceived price spectrum do well, with strong performance from Waitrose at the same time as Iceland, Aldi, Lidl and Netto.
